US Box Office Estimates March 26-28, 2010

After 3 weeks at the top of the charts, Alice is finally knocked off the top by another CGI-heavy 3D film aimed at kids,  (anyone seeing a pattern?). With Avatar's 5 weeks, and Alice's 3, that makes nine of the year's 13 weekends dominated by 3D movies.

Hot Tub also did well, considering it's more 'mature' target audience and mostly TV-centred cast, but it's real success will probably be with the "unrated" DVD (the MPAA being such prudes and all). Last weeks 2 and 3 swapped places, and bring up the end of the top5, with decent showings, although Diary has the posibility (along with Dragon and Alice) of a rebound during next week's Easter holidays.

Further down, She's Out of my League stays in 6th, ahead of Green Zone, (whose $30M total is a long way short of the $100M budget). Shutter Island has a respectable weekend, given it's age, but it's Repo Men, in it's second weekend, that had fallen hard, to 9th. However, the difference between 6th place League, and 9th place Repo Men is only $450,000. Meanwhile, record-breaker Avatar is still pulling in 7 figures, with an estimated weekend total just over $2Million. Avatar's US total is a hair over $740Million dollars, and a worldwide total of $2.67 BILLION dollars, impressive can be for a film that was released only 101 days ago (an average of around $26.5 Million dollars worldwide each day.)
Rank (last week) Film Weekend Gross (Millions) Theaters Total Gross to Date (Millions) Weeks on release
1 (N) How to Train Your Dragon $43.3 4,055 $43.3 1
2 (1) Alice in Wonderland $17.3 3,384 $293.1 4
3 (N) Hot Tub Time Machine $13.7 2,754 $13.7 1
4 (3) The Bounty Hunter $12.4 3,074 $38.8 2
5 (2) Diary of a Wimpy kid $10.0 3,083 $35.8 2
It’s important to remember, these figures for the weekend are released lunch-time Sunday, so estimate Sunday’s figures, there may be some discrepancies. Figures provided by BoxOfficeMojo. Click here for the full weekend figures.
